# Pool Safety — How to Keep Your Family Safe This Summer
Summer means pool season. But drowning is the leading cause of unintentional injury death for children ages 1 to 4. The good news? Most drowning incidents are preventable with the right precautions.
## Supervision is Everything
Never leave children unattended near water — not even for a second. Drowning happens silently and quickly, often in less than two minutes. Designate one adult as the "water watcher" whose only job is to watch the kids in and around the pool. No phones, no distractions.
## Teach Swimming Skills Early
Formal swimming lessons reduce the risk of drowning by about 70 percent for young children. It's one of the best investments you can make for your kids' safety.
## Use Layers of Protection
Don't rely on just one safety measure:
- Life jackets for weak swimmers and young children
- Fencing around the pool with self-closing, self-latching gates
- CPR training for all caregivers
- Keep rescue equipment poolside (ring buoys, rescue poles)
## Know CPR
If the unthinkable happens, CPR can save a life. Take a class — it's worth it. Many local fire departments and community centers offer free or low-cost training.
## Watch for These Warning Signs
- Silent drowning can look like a child standing still in the water or floating face down
- Gasping or coughing
- Head tilted back, mouth open
- Inability to call for help
If you see any of these, get the child out of the water immediately and call 911.
## Other Pool Safety Tips
- Drain or cover inflatable pools after each use
- Keep drains maintained — entrapment is a real hazard
- No running or horseplay around the pool
- Alcohol and swimming don't mix
- Have a first aid kit nearby
This summer, enjoy the pool. Just make sure safety comes first.
